Jon stands in the Hanover police station looking for his missing son Noah – but neither Jon, nor his son have papers: they are effectively non-existent. Despite the danger of Jon and his family falling on the authorities’ radar, his desperation drives him to the police.
Investigators Falke and Grosz, whose initial search for a smuggling network leads them to Hanover, soon believe they have a connection to the missing man and decide to help his father in his search. Falke and Grosz soon discover, however, that they quickly reach their limits in an environment whose relatives – first and foremost Jon’s wife Hope – prefer to remain hidden from the police.
Only when Falke and Grosz penetrate deeper and deeper into Hanover’s shadow economy do they realize that Noah must not have fallen victim to smugglers, but to inhumane working conditions. Working conditions from which many profit…
