He is the laughing stock of his students, he generally can’t get a beer in hip bars, and even his constantly stoned neighbour has more of a social life than he does: it’s practically impossible to be as uncool as the young physics teacher (Moritz Bleibtreu). His formulas are blocking his path to happiness. But his bleak teacher existence changes suddenly when he falls head over heels for the beautiful Melek (Idil Üner) and impulsively decides to follow her to Istanbul.
Accompanied by the cool jewellery saleswoman July (Christiane Paul), who has a secret crush on him, Daniel embarks on the long trip from Hamburg to Turkey. The wild odyssey through south eastern Europe becomes a trip of self-revelation. Beaten up, seduced, robbed, high on drugs for the first time in his life, and jailed by Turkish border guards Daniel learns to fight for his happiness. And he realises at the end of this long journey that love was always at his side…
